I am somewhat mortified that I was ignorant of Mike and The Waterboys until very recently, when I tumbled into love upon hearing "Fisherman's Blues" during the ending scene of an episode of the CBC series "Republic of Doyle." How could I have missed you in the 80s and 90s? Perhaps your music never got as far as some of the places I was teaching.

Well, I feel blessed to have found Mike and The Waterboys, even this late (I'm 70),and have purchased (digitally) the first "Best Of" album, several individual songs. and "An Appointment with W.B. Yeats." I especially love "White Bird," "Wandering Angus," and "The Faery's Last Song." I have also gotten my 46 year old son listening, especially after listening to Mike, in an interview, being a wee bit critical of 80s music, as my son once asked, rhetorically, "what the f*** were we listening to in the 80s."

Thank you so much for your wonderful music and poetry, and for setting Yeats to your music (love the duets with Katie)..

Blessings on all,
Gail

I find it difficult to believe that it has been 30 years since there was a Golden Day. I did not see the band play at Glastonbury in the summer of 1986 instead I heard them on a Radio 2 "in concert" broadcast, in the days when Radio 1 was broadcast on AM and Radio 2 in stereo on FM. Up until then my soul and imagination had been stirred up by 3 albums, culminating in the final version of the big music but so far I had yet to see the band live. Hearing them on that broadcast in my bedroom made up my mind, this was a band I had to see live, the power, the verve, the noise and the soul, what a wild and holy band!

It took a further 3 years before this happened.

The first being at the Barrowland in 1989, the 30th of December. I have never seen so many people packed into the Barrowland - what a night of unbelievable emotion. Since then I have managed to see The Waterboys and Mike Scott several times, the Pavilion and the Garage being 2 great "solo" shows. The gig at the Garage was memorable, with 2 drunken eejits trying to get backstage by claiming to be reporters from Q magazine, just flown up from London to interview Mike.

Skip forward a few years and a there have been a few more great albums, a fantastic book and some unbelievable concerts, especially when Anthony and Trevor decided to revisit the team, pity about the Ruffian though. There have been some great and soulful members of The Waterboys over the years delighting everyone with their fire and skill.

Finally I am at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow with yet another fantastic line up, whooping with delight as the Clash are name checked - another great band that fired up my imagination and my sense of politics- though I was too young to have seen them at their peak in the late 70's at the Apollo - it was good to hear Mike acknowledge them as an influence.

The next night at the Barrowland was equally as impressive from the guys and I am sure that they all left Glasgow with a sense of being appreciated and loved after 2 passionate shows.

As I say what a band, and I here I am again, after all these years, looking forward to seeing them live again, this time at Kelvingrove where hopefully I'll get to see them and once again they will delight all us waterpeople with their soulful brand of Celtic rock.

From tuning in in 83 to standing in the pit in front of the stage at Tunes in the Dunes you have given me nothing but genuine pleasure. It was an honour to meet you all again, the last time was in Findhorn in a different life. Thank you does not cover 33 years but it is heartfelt and with true love of being blinded by your brilliance.

I LOST MY FOOT, BUT FOUND MY SOUL
Dear Mr. Scott,
I am a 45 years old man from Norway and would just like to thank you for your wonderful music and let you know how it has helped me through the toughest challenge of my life. I have been a fan for over 25 years and I am proud to say your music has a prominent place in my otherwise modest collection of CDs, but it’s only after my recent traumatic experience, that I have fully learned to appreciate it.
Five weeks ago I had a terrible accident which led to the amputation of my right foot and lower leg. I am an active man, father of three wonderful kids, has a busy job (thankfully in an office) and have been re-building our house for the last five years. So loosing my right foot was not part of my plan. Anyway, since waking up after the emergency surgery, I have been filled with an intense, radiant, feeling of love and gratitude. In the first days and weeks, I listened a lot to your music and even if it’s very familiar to me, I found it to speak to me in a totally new way. Your lyrics came alive, touched me more than ever and made me cry as I finally understood. I could go on forever, quoting your lyrics and describe how your music became the soundtrack of my recovery and what has turned in to a profound change in mentality, inner life and how I view and approach the world. I would go as far as saying my accident was a blessing in disguise, that I lost my foot, but found my soul. And your music was the catalyst in this process.
My own words and language become blunt and clumsy, so instead I borrow yours. No-one can describe the love I feel for my beloved wife as you do in She is so beautiful. She is a vision of beauty and truly has a beautiful soul, she is like a song, like a ray of light, like children praying, like harps and bells and cymbals playing. Throughout this traumatic experience, she has been my rock in the weary land. I hope it also brings a smile to your face that I declared my love for her 22 years ago with a good old tape with song about a man in love and he was me.
As an anglophile/lover of all things British, which also led to me and my family living 4 years in UK, I have visited Glastonbury and will for sure going back to the green hill one fine day. Cause I just found God where he always was. Dream harder came out during the days I first met my wife, so these songs will always be special for me. We met in Bergen, where we both went to study, so this town is where the new life started, we prepared to fly under our own steam and we never felt so great since going west.
These last weeks a lot of people have helped me, fantastic doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, orthopedic engineers, friends, family and colleagues. The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming and makes me want to bring them all into my heart.
As you understand your music has been with me for a long time, but it’s not until now I understood that I have heard THE big music. I have always liked it, but that was the river, this is the sea. To me, you are the one who saw the whole of the moon. For that, I am forever grateful. So imagine my joy when I in my sick bed discovered you are playing in Norway this summer, and in my neighbour town! I booked tickets for me and my wife right away. She was a bit worried it would be too soon, but I told her I would be there in a wheelchair if that is what it takes. Looking forward to seeing and hearing you live for the first time August 4th at Notodden Bluesfestival.
Been a long way to the light, thank you for helping me find it and for making the soundtrack to my life.

Sandra, U.K.

Thank you for giving up your time for photos etc for me and my daughter Emmeline, at the Wychwood Festival. I have loved your music from the start- listening to your albums on tapes on my Walkman as a student in Edinburgh in the 80s. I studied Archaeology and spent 6 weeks "digging" in the Western Isles-an amazing backdrop for those songs! 30 years on and Emmeline is now a fan and can "see" your music online- hence her adoration of Brother Paul! Thank you for helping us make some fantastic memories over the years and especially at Wychwood.

I am so excited to be seeing you this summer in Kelvingrove. It happens to coincide with my trip to Scotland. The first time I heard "This is the Sea" and "Old England" in 1987, I fell in love with your music and this will be the first opportunity to have seen The Waterboys.

My husband, son and I will be there August 8th.

Pentecost...
In Dutch PINKSTEREN..used to mean PINKPOP on Monday. On Monday 19th May 1986, almost 30 years ago, it was the first time of many I saw the Waterboys and like Music From Big Pink changed peoples life this performance changed a lot too. Brilliant. And Dutch Radio broadcasts many times the version they played there of Purple Rain, which I think is beside All Along the Watchtower of Jimi H. the best cover ever.
Anyway, just want to say that was a great day back in 1986 (hot too).

32 years ago a teenage version of me rocked up at Liverpool Uni to check out a new band after my brother played me the 12inch version of "December". Last November I smiled like a Cheshire cat at the Empire as that band thrilled me just as much as they did back then. Thanks for the wonderful memories Mike, and I look forward to more musical adventures.
