Fantastic show in Galway last night--sultry summers evening,Mike with an attitude in his voice and Steve throwing his hair around--and then we spot Richard Naiff on the keys--knew a great night was in store. Q--where was joe chester and does Mike not like the smell of a BBQ??

Webteam writes:

Hi John,

Joe was in France riding bicycle in L'Etape du Tour.

Mike requested that the BBQ at the gig be closed down because it was sending smoke and fumes into the tent, which were shutting down Mike's voice during the soundcheck. It was the smoke, rather than the smell, that was causing a problem. As always, Mike wanted his voice to be in top form for the folks who had come out to see the band, which would not have been the case had the BBQ remained open. Chances are it would have had half the audience coughing too!

Love,
Paige

Paige, was at Ulster Hall gig last Friday and Mike and the 'Boys played the epic 'Long Strange Golden Road.'
This song was released on an American Magazine CD a couple of years ago with the title 'A Wild Holy Band', which was in the original lyrics.
Just wondering what prompted Mike to re-title the track?

Webteam writes:

Hello Thomas,

A Wild Holy Band was only a working title. Mike always knew he would retitle it, but hadn't found the right one at the point in time the magazine CD was issued.

Paige

What a brilliant gig at the Ulster Hall - probably my fav Waterboys show so far. Two questions please - what was the music just before and after the show? And who is that fantastic character on organ/piano - some info would be appreciated please.

Webteam writes:

Hi John,

The music before the show was a mashup, created by Mike, of lots of different instrumental things - Rolling Stones, Ennio Morricone, Jean-Claude Vannier, George Harrison, British Sea Power and many others. The music immediately before the band came on was Shin Jung Hyun, the great Korean guitarist of the 60s and 70s, doing the solo at the end of his ten minute classic Beautiful Country, as mashed and edited by Mike. After the show was Theme From Once Upon A Time In The West by Ennio Morricone followed by Sharon Shannon's Each Little Thing.

The 'fantastic character' on keys was Paul Brown aka Brother Paul- keyboardist extraordinaire from Nashville, Tennessee. He's something special all right!

Paige

Hi :-)
In june 1986 I saw the Waterboys for the first time at Sardines in Oslo. If someone at that time would have sugested that my all time favourite band was to play in my small hometown Elverum almost 30 years later, I would have called them nuts. Well its seems like an reality now on august 3rd.
My only concern is that it says nothing on the "shows" site here. Anyway it seems like its gonna happen, if the local newspapers are to be believed.
Cant wait!!!

Webteam writes:

Elverum is confirmed and should be appearing in the 'shows' section very soon.

FINALLY just was able to listen to the Appointment with Mr. Yeats CD. Only wish I hade been able to see the live show. Knowing Yeats' obsession with rhythms and sounds, I can only believe that somewhere he is smiling and saying: "Yes! That is EXACTLY how I wanted it to sound!!"

I was at the Hamer Hall gig in Melbourne and near the end of the show - under pressure from callers from the audience - Mike said that they would "return next year" (2014) before correcting himself to "the year after next" (ie 2015). So we're going to hold him to that!! :)

Cheers

Hi PAIGE, between 1981 and 1985 the Waterboys have been doing what become to be called THE BIG MUSIC. In 1994 i bought a cd single called " The Whole Of The Moon And The Golden Age Medley ". The title named THE GOLDEN AGE was it intended to be a new musical concept or to mark a new era??

Greetings from PORTUGAL, CARLOS

Webteam writes:

Hi Carlos,

No, it wasn't meant to mark a shift of any kind.

Last time I saw the Waterboys live was on the 19th of November 2001 at the Paradiso in Amsterdam (the last venue of the tour was in my hometown of Tramore but unfortunately I missed that...).

After all those years the music still sounds great.

Any chance of doing another concert in the Netherlands?

Webteam writes:

Hello Patrick,

Nothing scheduled now but the band will most certainly return! It's only a matter of when.

Thank you, Mike, and all the Waterboys, for working your butts off (and your hearts out) and making all that inspired and inspiring music we can now all indulge in on Fisherman's Box. What a colossal epic masterpiece of a boxed set. Hours and hours of listening, learning and loving in that there box. The original Fisherman's Blues is one of my very favourite albums ever and this box adds a million more multicoloured dimensions to the original. You've outdone yourselves. The thing just plain and simple transcends. Thank you again for bringing this all to light and to our ears. This is the stuff that makes our world spin, and spin, and spin.
