MIKE COLLABORATES WITH THE TOWN OF HUNTLY
May 5th 2008

Mike Scott is involved in a project for the Scottish town of Huntly, birthplace of Scottish novelist George MacDonald. Twenty years ago Mike set MacDonald’s poem Room To Roam to music and used it as the title of the 1990 Waterboys’ album. A few months ago Huntly artist-in-residence Jacques Coetzer asked Mike to help turn Room To Roam into the town’s anthem. Mike has been working with local musicians and singers on a communal version of the song to be performed at the Huntly Entertainment On The Square concert, Sunday 1st June (time tbc). We asked Mike how it sounds and he replied: “Room To Roam is amazing with a choir and a big band, like a mad carousel of music, and it’s great fun doing it with MacDonald’s own townspeople”. The project is being run in connection with Deveron Arts and Huntly Council.

MIKE’S COLLABORATION WITH ONE PEOPLE - NEW SINGLE
Sep 13th 2007

Mike has joined with Norwegian organisation One People for a single titled IN THE BEGINNING WAS LOVE, which will be released in Norway on 5th October. The song was written by Mike and his friend, American author David Spangler, and some people may remember it from the Waterboys’ Midsummer 2006 acoustic shows. The single version has a new arrangement featuring Mike on lead vocals, with supporting vocals by Norway-based Somalian singer Noora Noor and instrumentation by top Norwegian musicians. Mike describes it as “exquisite spiritual funk”. Production is by Rune “Two Sticks” Lamøy and Åsmund Gylder.

In The Beginning Was Love is by “One People featuring Mike Scott from The Waterboys and Noora Noor”. It will be released on CD by MTG Music, through Musikkoperatørene, and also as a download from iTunes and other web stores. Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet is offering a limited number of free downloads with its October 23 issue. People outside Norway can purchase the single from October 5 at: www.one-people.com

One People was founded by Native American poet and activist Tom LaBlanc and Norwegian musician Asmund Gylder. One People is a non-political, non-religious, idealistic foundation. Its goal is to promote peace and solidarity through music. We asked Mike how the collaboration came about and he explained by email: “Asmund contacted me a year or so ago, and I was impressed by his letter. I felt sympathetic to the organisation, and the One People records he sent me were brilliant - great songs and performances, masterful production, with a coherent idealistic message. I thought ‘I wanna make a record with these people’. So when Asmund asked me if I had a song for their second album, I sent him a demo of In The Beginning Was Love. I didn’t expect it would become a single, but Asmund and his team worked deep magic on it, and here it comes!”

CAMBRIDGE AND MIDLANDS - WHAT HAPPENED
Jul 30th 2007

The Waterboys played two eventful shows this weekend at the Cambridge Folk Festival in England and the Midlands Music Festival in Ireland.  At Cambridge on Friday night, Mike opened the show with a solo version of the venerable folk song Barbara Allen.  A few songs later the band was joined by Sharon Shannon on accordion for The Raggle Taggle Gypsy, and at the end of the show by Steve Earle, Sharon Shannon, fiddler John McCusker and flute player Michael McGoldrick for a hootenanny-style finale of This Land Is Your Land, with Mike and Steve Earle trading verses.

Earlier in the day Sharon joined Mike and Steve for their acoustic session on Stuart Maconie's BBC Radio 2 show. You can hear the session and interview here:www.bbc.co.uk (click on Stuart Maconie On Saturday). The BBC have also uploaded a film of the band's onstage performance of The Whole Of The Moon, which you can see here:
www.bbc.co.uk/

On Saturday at the Midlands Festival, the band unveiled two new additions to the set.  In the guise of rustic singer Gobnait O'Gallagher (pronounced 'Gubnit'), Steve Wickham sang lead vocal on a version of Lou Reed's classic Walk On The Wild Side.  This was followed by a solo fuzz fiddle rendition of the Irish National Anthem, played a la Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner.
