FEBRUARY / MARCH 1991 In Dublin Mike records publishing demos of unreleased songs written over the previous 5 years. Anthony plays sax and bass on some tracks.
APRIL 1991 Trevor leaves to play full time with Sharon Shannon, now leading her own band. Re-issued "Whole Of The Moon" single is a huge hit in the UK.
MAY 1991 Mike's contract with Ensign Records expires. Label releases "The Best Of The Waterboys 1981-1990".
JULY / AUGUST 1991 Mike records demos of many of the songs which will comprise "Dream Harder".
SEPTEMBER 1991 Mike's first solo show at The Abbey Theatre, Dublin as part of The Yeats International Festival. He plays a set comprising adaptations of Yeats' poetry and his own songs backed by an ensemble of Irish musicians including Clannad bassist, Ciaran Brennan. Mike plays a short set with former Sawdoctors member Padraig Stevens at The West's Awake Festival in Tuam. In a local hotel after the show, Mike, Anthony Thistlethwaite and Sawdoctors guitarist Leo Moran join an Irish cabaret band on stage for a long impromptu set that includes "And A Bang On The Ear", and Hank Williams songs. Mike moves to Greenwich Village, New York. Mike plays at the Beacon Theatre, New York as part of the "Ban The Dam Jam" benefit concert - his first one-man show.
DECEMBER 1991 Mike and Anthony split.
JANUARY to SEPTEMBER 1992 Recording of "Dream Harder" begins at Right Track studios, New York. Mike co-produces with English producer/engineer Bill Price.
OCTOBER 1992 Back in the UK for a few weeks, Mike visits The Findhorn Community in Scotland for the first time.
NOVEMBER 1992 Mike plays two word-of-mouth acoustic shows at Cafe Sin E in New York's East Village.
DECEMBER 1992 Mike's first stay at The Findhorn Community. Mike appears on Irish Television, guesting on The Late Late Show's Tribute to Sharon Shannon. He and Sharon perform one song together as a duo.
JANUARY / FEBRUARY 1993 Recording 'b' sides in New York, Mike works for the first time with engineer/producer NIKO BOLAS.
APRIL 1993 The first new Waterboys single in 4 years, "The Return Of Pan" is released.
MAY 1993 "Dream Harder", Mike's return to rock and roll is released on Geffen Records.
JULY 1993 Unsuccessful auditions in New York for a new touring Waterboys line-up. "Glastonbury Song" is released as a single. Mike performs it on BBC's "Top Of The Pops" with CHRIS BRUCE, SCOTT THUNES and CARLA AZAR, all of whom have played on "Dream Harder". Mike's second stay at The Findhorn Community.
AUGUST 1993 Mike leaves New York, abandons attempts to assemble new Waterboys, returns to Europe.
NOVEMBER 1993 Third stay at Findhorn Community.
JANUARY to APRIL 1994 Mike stays at Findhorn Community as a long-term guest. He performs his latest songs at Community concerts in the Universal Hall Theatre.
APRIL 1994 Mike decides to live full-time in Findhorn.
MAY 6 1994 Full Mike Scott solo show at Universal Hall, Findhorn.
JUNE 1994 Mike plays two more solo shows at Universal Hall. On both nights the show is divided into two sets with a short intermission. This format will last for the next year and a half as Mike takes his one-man show around Europe. At Glastonbury Festival, Mike guests on the main stage with Ian McNabb and Crazy Horse playing scorching rock and roll and later the same afternoon playing two acoustic songs with Sharon Shannon on the acoustic stage.
AUGUST 1994 One-man shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh and at The Greenbelt Festival in England.
SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 1994 With co-producer Niko Bolas, Mike records his one-man album "Bring 'Em All In" in the tiny recording studio in the basement of Universal Hall. The title track is recorded in the sacred atmosphere of the Community Sanctuary.
OCTOBER 1994 "The Secret Life Of The Waterboys", a collection of rare or unreleased tracks from the early Waterboys days is released by Chrysalis Records.
NOVEMBER 1994 Mixing Sessions in New York for "Bring 'Em All In". Mike begins short solo UK tour - his first in over 4 years.
JANUARY to MAY 1995 Further short one-man tours of the UK, Europe, Scotland and Ireland, as Mike refines and shapes the programme of his show into an intimate and powerful experience.
JUNE 1995 Show on the acoustic stage at Glastonbury Festival.
JULY 1995 Mike re-signs to Chrysalis Records, moves back to London.
SEPTEMBER 1995 "Bring 'Em All In" single and album released. One-off show at Merkin Concert Hall in New York.
OCTOBER 1995 UK Tour ending with 2 sell-out shows at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London. "Building The City Of Light" single is released.
NOVEMBER 1995 European Tour.
DECEMBER 1995 Mike plays at The Olympia Theatre in Dublin and is joined onstage by Steve Wickham for a version of "Fisherman's Blues".
JANUARY 1996 Japanese tour ; Mike's first there.
FEBRUARY 1996 In London Mike records demos for what will become "Still Burning".
FEBRUARY / MARCH 1996 North American Tour begins in Atlanta and ends in San Francisco.
MARCH 29 1996 Short sharp set at a Creation Records/Rough Trade Concert at Subterranea in London.
APRIL 18 1996 Last show of the one-man touring era at Bourges Festival, France.
JUNE to SEPTEMBER 1996 "Still Burning" is recorded in London. Mike and Niko Bolas produce. The principal musicians are Jim Keltner, Chris Bruce and Pino Palladino.
SEPTEMBER 6 1996 Only live performance of the "Still Burning" recording band - a two song set at The EMI Conference in Birmingham, England.
DECEMBER 1996 "Still Burning" is mixed by Chris Sheldon, with A&R input from Creation Records boss, Alan McGee.
FEBRUARY 1997 Mike appears on Irish Television show "Sult" performing "Dark Man of My Dreams" with the Sult house band and Scottish guitarist Jimmy Hogarth.
MARCH to JUNE 1997 Auditions for new band in London.
JULY 1997 Mike begins rehearsing with his first full band since 1990. The players are : JAMES HALLAWELL (Keyboards) who played on "Still Burning", JEREMY STACEY (Drums) and GAVIN "FINGERS" RALSTON from Dublin on Electric Guitar. The line up is completed by Mike's friend, solo artist in his own right IAN McNABB, playing Bass Guitar. The sound is full tilt electric rock and roll - a complete contrast to the one-man show.
AUGUST 1997 Mike and Band debut with warm-up shows at Southend and Oxford before a run of five sweltering shows at The Garage in London. Short tour of Norway.
SEPTEMBER 1997 "Love Anyway" single released. "Still Burning" album released. Jeremy Stacey is replaced by Zak Starkey for shows in Belgium and Holland.
OCTOBER 1997 UK Tour begins in Sheffield. GEOFF DUGMORE replaces Zak Starkey.
NOVEMBER 1997 Japanese Tour. Short European Tour. December 1997 Short UK Tour supporting Sheryl Crow. Shows in Dublin and Belfast.
FEBRUARY 1998 "Rare, Precious And Gone" single released. "Still Burning" touring band gives last performance - a version of "Rare, Precious And Gone" on UK TV's "Jack Doherty Show".
MARCH 1998 Mike's contract with Chrysalis Records ends.
APRIL 1998 Mike demos new songs in London.
MAY 1998 Waterboys Anthony Thistlethwaite and Trevor Hutchinson are reunited with Mike for a thrilling live performance of "Killing My Heart" on Irish TV show "Sibin" (Shebeen).
JUNE 1998 Mike plays The Fleadh Festival in London and a warm-up show the night before at The Mean Fiddler. Anthony guests on Electric Mandolin and Sax. The rest of the band is Ian McNabb, Dave Ruffy and keyboard player Claire Nicholson. "The Live Adventures Of The Waterboys", a 2-CD set, is released containing performances from The Waterboys' 1986 tours.
JULY 1998 Shows at Montreaux Jazz Festival, Bruges in Belgium, Galway Arts Festival and Expo '98 in Lisbon, with various line-ups. At Galway Steve Wickham and Anthony Thistlethwaite join Mike for a three song encore.
AUGUST 1998 One-man show at The Greenbelt Festival in England.
SEPTEMBER 1998 EMI/Chrysalis release "The Whole Of The Moon - The Music Of Mike Scott And The Waterboys" containing music from all stages of Mike's Waterboys and solo careers.
DECEMBER 1998 Mike records a new version of "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy" with master Galician piper Carlos Nunez. Trevor Hutchinson also plays on the recording. The track will appear in 1999 on Carlos' second album "Os Amores Libres".
JANUARY 1999 Recording sessions begin for what will become "A Rock In The Weary Land" at Maison Rouge Studios in London. For the first time since "Fisherman's Blues" Mike produces the album himself.
FEBRUARY to DECEMBER 1999 Recordings continue on and off throughout the year.
MAY 31 1999 At the request of original Waterboys drummer Kevin Wilkinson, Mike plays a forty minute set at the Kosovo benefit concert in Swindon. He is joined by Kevin and Anthony Thistlethwaite for versions of "Killing My Heart" and "Medicine Bow".
JULY 31 1999 One-man show at the Bodo Festival in Norway.
OCTOBER 7 1999 Mike Scott and Steve Wickham play an acoustic show together at the Hawkswell Theatre in Sligo, Ireland. The seventy five minute set includes many "Fisherman's Blues" era Waterboys songs.
NOVEMBER 25 1999 At The Stables Theatre, Milton Keynes, Mike plays a set full of brand new songs and songs from the forthcoming album. He is accompanied on piano and organ by Richard Naiff.
DECEMBER 1999 Mike
joins Latvian singer Ainars Mielavs in Riga, Latvia to record their joint
composition "On My Way To The Big Light". It will be released
3 months later on Ainars' album "Es Naku us Taviem smiekliem (I Come
At The Sound Of Your Laughter)".
